Mulan by Lamorien Mulan by Lamorien
...Until I can come up with a cleverer name for it. Okay, someone please tell me, if this movie supposedly takes place in China, how come they throw the whole geisha thing in there? I mean, that's 100% Japanese culture, right? Not to mention, the random Japanese flag in the tent where injured Ping is "discovered" by Shang? GEEZ DISNEY....And yet I still love this movie. Another in my Disney/Hair illustration series. Is 3 enough to be a series?

This one will be selling for $17 in my Etsy shop.

I wanted to start off by saying this is an amazing series. I haven't seen many others (if any) do the back of Disney heroines' hair.

Ok...now I'm going to give a stab at answering your question. I looked up what you were talking about and did a little bit of searching to find the answers to your question. So here is what I've concluded.

A great deal of Japanese culture was heavily influenced by China (they still use Kanji, or Chinese writing after all) Many of the aesthetics of their make-up and fashion were influenced in part by China, especially in the distant past. The white face make-up may have simply been something aesthetic in China at one time and later influenced the appearance of geisha in later years. The reasons geisha wear white face make-up are numerous but i'm not going to complicate things with that. Also, if you compare Japanese furisode which geisha (especially Maiko) wear and the dress that Mulan is wearing they aren't really the same...and when you look at fashions from periods like the tang dynasty what she is wearing is fairly similar. Actually here's an artist who's done a few pieces showing the evolution of a few Asian cultures like China and Vietnam: [link]

As to the "Japanese flag" I see where the confusion stemmed from but after searching a bit I found out that apparently for a period of Chinese history that symbol was used to denote medic's tents which makes sense given the scene it appears in and since the Japanese flag would not have been conceived yet in that time I don't think it was meant to be the Japanese flag.

i'm sorry if you were being rhetorical with your question but when I see a question I think I might be able to answer I try to answer it. :D hope I helped and if not well...I do enjoy your art. :D

wahh! That is a lot of information! Thanks for clearing some of that up for me. Honestly, basically all I know about these cultures come from movies so yeah. I'm a bit behind on that. I appreciate you taking the time to set some things straight haha. I actually have seen that evolution of Asian cultures before, it's so cool! Thanks for visiting my page :)

Yeah...sometimes I get carried away. :XD: Hopefully you didn't find it too overwhelming. :D I thought might be able to answer some of your questions and I also wanted to take a look at those things you were specifically talking about because I don't always notice those things and it's been ages since I've seen Mulan. :D I admit I did have to do a small bit of checking myself to be able to answer your question but I'm glad I was able to clarify things for you. :D I know that Disney sometimes plays fast and loose with eras, cultures and what not so I was at first just curious to see if this was one of those cases and then learned a lot myself. :D I'm glad we were both able to learn something. :D Again I enjoy your art and thanks for sharing it with the community. :D

:) I will never accuse someone of learning too much or getting carried away with knowledge. Thanks for the comments, I appreciate them!

:D well that's good to hear. I often joke that I know a lot of "useless crap" lol and there is nothing worse than being accused of being a know-it-all. I love knowledge and I love to share it so...I'm glad that I didn't overwhelm you in my desire to share what I was able to find out in regards to your question. :D I learned something about it too which was nice. :D
